honestly, I'm not surprised to learn that so few blacks are among the 30 million people who participate in fantasy sports. I've always thought that a lot of these guys (and 96% of them are guys) are nerds desperately in need of more sociable leisure time activities. Leisure time for black folks historically consists of direct interaction, the kind of experience you get at a family barbecue or hanging out with friends. Sitting in front of a computer screen pretending to be Bill Parcells? Sounds like work to me.

Total cost of retaining all 18 players for 2009 could approach $33 million (see chart), a figure the Marlins haven't reached for their 25-man roster since 2005. Bringing back the most vital contributors from this year's team could cost $44 million.

Marlins' projected payroll, player-by-player Topping the arbitration list are All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla (27 home runs), right-hander Ricky Nolasco (13 wins) and two-year closer Kevin Gregg (29 saves). That trio could see its 2009 haul hit a combined $12 million, with Uggla leading the way at a projected $5 million.

Welcome, ladies and gents, to the third annual Baseball Prospectus Ultimate Fantasy Draft. What, you are probably wondering, is the Baseball Prospectus Ultimate Fantasy Draft? It is the answer to this question: If you were starting a baseball team from scratch, which players would you want to build your team around? That is, which players would you take—and in what order would you take them—if your goal was to win as many championships as possible over the medium-to-long-term?

OT: Sim Baseball League -- Baseball Mogul -- Needs owners -- Free

Hi all,

I've been playing Baseball Mogul for 9 years or so now, and about 7 of that online with a group of friends. We have a league file, website, and sim two weeks of a season twice a week. There is contract negotiation, strategy, free agency bidding, trading, and articles on the league, especially when there are good and active owners.

CML is the Classic Mogul League. The league started in 1955, and has been having historical drafts since then. The current year in the league is 1993.

The game is free on the website (released into public domain by the publisher), and I would love it if any of you had the time to join us. I spend less than an hour a week on avergae tending to thought about my team, and while I have never brought home the statue for my team, we have been in the playoffs consistently. Oh, by the way, Milwaukee just drafted A-Rod, and that team is open. The following teams are open:

CLE
MIL
SF
SEA
PIT

Normally, we don't hurt for owners, but we are currently down 5 out of 30. Again, I would love it if you considered joining. If you are interested, please email our league commisioner, Steve Sparks (cmlcommish@cox.net). Most communication between owners is done via IM, email, or our forums.

I look forward to seeing you at winter meetings!

Nonetheless, you would have to say the quarterback pendulum has clearly swung in favor of Kyle Orton. The simple fact is that Grossman is in his sixth NFL season and will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end means logic dictates Orton, the younger, more unknown quantity, gets the chance to grow into the position.

Stephania Bell: (11:19 AM ET ) Hi Joe: Well, I wasn't sure how much confidence I would have in him a few months ago, but what he has shown so far in camp has been impressive. He has practiced daily, played already in a preseason game (which by all accounts we did not think he would do) and looked good and MOST importantly, did not have any ill after effects. I would definitely consider him a number two receiver. Yes, a bit more risk given last year's history - but a good chance of high productivity for a number two if he stays healthy.

John Manuel : (2:28 PM ET ) Jackson's ceiling is a skoch higher but he's quite a bit less polished with the bat than McCutchen. But for me, Jackson's the better prospect.

It is, however, a very clear sign that we’ve gone too far. A good idea—protecting pitchers from injury due to overuse—has been warped, with ill effects for the industry. The marginal innings that veteran starters aren’t throwing—and we’re talking about maybe 10-20 a season for some large number of pitchers—are not just going to inferior pitchers, but they’re driving roster decisions that have changed the way the game is played. As much as La Russa-influenced tactics have helped redesign reliever usage, the lack of those extra pitches and extra innings has forced teams to carry 11, 12, and sometimes 13 pitchers as a workaround. That change has reduced the amount of platooning and shortened benches to the point that many teams have non-functioning reserve corps.

Signing my contract is something I wanted to get out of the way. I did not want to hold out. Now that the financial aspect is taken care of, it is time to play football.

Ryan (Pittsburgh): Who on the Pirates roster do you think may get dealt, and do you think they can get legit top prospects for them?

Buster Olney: Ryan: I think Marte and Nady will be traded, and so far, other GMs say, the asking price for Nady is off-the-charts high. I'm sure Pittsburgh wants to take advantage of any desperation that develops, but at some point, the price will probably have to come down. If, for comparison's sake, you rated the Sabathia trade package as a 10, I'd bet the Pirates would get an '8' package for Nady. The Dodgers have talked about Jack Wilson, but their larger problem is offense, and he would only harden that issue; they need somebody with pop, so it'll be interesting to see if the Dodgers' desperation reaches a point where they actually give up decent prospects for someone whose value (to them, in terms of addressing their problems) is dubious.
